GCash Enters Tax Refund Market, Boosting Convenience for Filipino Travelers
Philippine e-wallet giant GCash has partnered with Alipay+ and Global Blue to launch a new service allowing instant tax refunds in pesos for overseas purchases. This initiative aims to reduce currency exchange fees and foreign exchange rate risks for Filipino travelers.
E-wallet giant GCash is making a significant push into the international tax refund market, aiming to enhance convenience for Filipino travelers. In partnership with Alipay+ and Swiss company Global Blue, GCash has launched a new feature that allows users to receive their overseas tax refunds instantly in Philippine pesos. Carlos Bauza, GCash vice president for international payments, highlighted that traditional tax refund processes often involve weeks of waiting and expose travelers to foreign currency exchange fees and rate fluctuations. The new Digital Tax Refund feature enables travelers to generate a QR code on the GCash app, which airport authorities can scan to directly transfer the refund amount to their GCash wallet in pesos. "We are giving Filipino travelers a faster and more convenient way to receive the money they are entitled to, directly in pesos through the GCash app they already use every day," Bauza said. This initiative aims to eliminate the need for travelers to carry leftover foreign currency and mitigate the reduction in refund value due to exchange rate volatility. The service is currently available in 16 countries, including Argentina, Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, and Switzerland, with plans for further expansion. GCash's broader international expansion efforts also include a feature introduced in March that allows Filipinos to send money to foreign bank accounts for same-day crediting. These moves align with the upcoming listing of GCash's parent company, Mynt Inc., on the Philippine Stock Exchange, which is targeting a record P92.3-billion debut.
