Thai Incursions into Cambodia Not New, Experts Note; Thailand Mimics Great Powers in Pressuring Cambodia
Cambodian scholars highlight that Thailand's incursions into Cambodia are a historical phenomenon, now mimicking great powers through information warfare and military pressure. They warn in the context of border disputes and sovereignty violations.
Two prominent Cambodian scholars have sounded the alarm, asserting that Thailand's incursions into Cambodia are a historically recurring phenomenon, and that in contemporary times, Thailand is employing tactics modeled after great powers to exert pressure. Dr. Sok Touch, President of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, stated during a roundtable discussion on "What is the Scenario Causing the World to Lose Order Today?" held on July 17th, that Thailand's invasions of Cambodia are not new but have continued from the past to the present. He cited historical examples, such as Thailand taking advantage of Cambodia's weakness to attack after Cambodia had supported Thailand in its war with Burma (now Myanmar). He also referred to the 1904 treaty between France and Siam (Thailand), questioning why the current Thai side seems to be attempting to deny or not recognize historical documents that their ancestors acknowledged. Dr. Sok Touch analyzed that Thailand has skillfully adapted its strategies according to changes in the international situation. He explained that Thailand has allied with Britain during its period of influence, with France when France held power, and with Japan when Japan became a great power, all to advance its own interests, including expanding its influence over Cambodia. He urged all Cambodian children to study history and strengthen their own capabilities. Meanwhile, Mr. Puy Kea, President of the Cambodian Journalists Association, commented that the current world order is in flux, with powerful nations tending to oppress smaller and weaker countries. He accused Thailand of specifically mimicking great powers, using all means, including military force and information warfare, to violate Cambodia's sovereignty. Mr. Puy Kea provided specific examples, stating, "Indeed, in the Cambodian-Thai border conflict, Thailand has used all methods simultaneously: armed conflict, aircraft, drones, and information warfare. This is what each country in the world is striving to utilize." Furthermore, Mr. Puy Kea criticized the Thai Foreign Minister for holding informal discussions with ASEAN foreign ministers to present a clean image of contributing to peace in Myanmar, while Thailand itself is invading Cambodia.
