Estrada, Defensor seek bail from Sandiganbayan

Senator Jinggoy Estrada and former lawmaker Mike Defensor, both currently detained on charges of plunder and graft, have filed separate petitions for bail with the Sandiganbayan, the anti-graft court. Estrada, who was arrested on June 1 in connection with alleged irregularities in flood control projects, is seeking temporary liberty while his case proceeds. His seven-page petition argues that there is "no strong evidence" to prove his guilt. In non-bailable cases, defendants can be granted temporary liberty if they can demonstrate that the evidence of guilt is not strong. Estrada has been detained at the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas since June. In a separate but related case, Defensor, along with businessman Joseph Espiritu, Senator Rodante Marcoleta, and Aristotle Viray, are facing plunder charges stemming from questions surrounding Marcoleta's campaign donations. They were arrested on July 6 and have been detained since. Defensor and Espiritu, similar to Estrada, contend that the evidence against them is not strong enough to warrant continued detention. Estrada is the highest-ranking sitting official arrested in connection with the flood control scandal. The Sandiganbayan's 5th Division had previously denied Estrada's motion to fix bail on July 28, deeming it premature. These bail petitions highlight the ongoing legal battles faced by public officials accused of corruption in the Philippines, a persistent issue that impacts public trust in governance.
