Hatyai School Moves Classes Online After Alleged Threats by Former Foreign Teacher

Hatyai Wittayalai School in southern Thailand announced on Monday that classes will be moved online on Monday and Tuesday (August 10-11) after a former foreign teacher allegedly posted messages and images of weapons that appeared to be a threat to shoot administrators and teachers, TV Channel 7 and PPTVHD36 said this evening (August 8). At 4.20 p.m. Ms. Thivichaya Meechuworapong, the school director, filed a report at Hatyai police station that a former employee, a foreign teacher from South Africa identified in her announcement as Mr. Pieter Johannes Dreyer, had posted messages and images on a LINE open chat group with approximately 5,000 members with these perceived to be a threat to shoot school administrators and teachers. The school director said she took this action because she feared for the safety of herself, students, staff and property following yesterday’s deadly shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School. A 14-year-old student went on a shooting spree killing seven people, including himself, and injuring over 20 others within the premises after having earlier also killed his grandparents. Hatyai Wittayalai School also announced that classes will be conducted online on Monday and Tuesday with the school administration to review and reassess the situation and more stringently enhance security within the school premises.
