Bhumjaithai Ministers Among 229 Suspects in Senatorial Rigging Plot, Government Faces Uncertainty

Several Bhumjaithai party cabinet ministers have been identified among a total of 229 suspects in the 2024 senatorial election rigging conspiracy, adding to the growing political uncertainty in Thailand. The list now includes Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Pancharoenworakul, Deputy Transport Minister Patrapong Patraprasit, Prime Minister’s Office Minister Supamas Isarapakdee, and the Prime Minister’s secretary Traisulee Traisaranakul, alongside Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and de facto Bhumjaithai leader Newin Chidchob. Earlier accusations had already implicated Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri, Prime Minister’s Office Ministers Paradorn Prisnanuntakul, Suksamruay Wantaneeyakui and Napinthorn Srisanpang, chief government whip Koravee Prisnanuntakul, and former deputy House speaker Supachai Bhosu. Former election commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn has stated that the Bhumjaithai party, a major component of the ruling coalition, could face dissolution by court if its members are found guilty of premeditated vote-buying and bloc-vote rigging. The conspiracy is alleged to have led to questionable victories for 138 out of 200 senators. Attention is now focused on whether the Election Commission will file a lawsuit with the Supreme Court against the 229 suspects, including key Bhumjaithai figures, next Monday. Should the Supreme Court accept the case, Prime Minister Anutin and his cabinet colleagues from the Bhumjaithai party would be immediately suspended from their executive duties pending a court ruling. Reports indicate that an initial fact-finding subcommittee had advised for the dissolution of the Bhumjaithai party due to the severity of the alleged wrongdoings. However, a subsequent subcommittee reportedly reached an opposing conclusion, suggesting the allegations against all 229 suspects be dropped.
