Spate of Vigilante Attacks Across Indonesia Leaves Victims Dead

Vigilante justice is on the rise across Indonesia, with several incidents of mob beatings against suspected criminals resulting in fatalities. Cases reported in Bali, Morowali (Central Sulawesi), and Lamongan (East Java) highlight the alarming trend, prompting police investigations. In Tabanan Regency, Bali, a man identified by the initials KD died after being beaten by a mob on suspicion of stealing fighting chickens. The incident occurred early Friday morning (July 24) around 01:30 WITA in Banjar Dinas Juwuk Legi, Desa Batunya, Baturiti District. Residents allegedly caught KD attempting to steal chickens, which triggered anger due to frequent chicken thefts in the area. In addition to assaulting KD, the enraged mob also burned his motorcycle. Police have named five individuals as suspects in the beating and are investigating the motorcycle burning incident. Meanwhile, in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, a 33-year-old man identified as S died after being beaten by a mob for allegedly attempting to steal a motorcycle on Saturday (July 25) around 23:05 WITA. When his alleged theft was discovered, the victim reportedly fled into a minimarket. Despite being cornered at the cashier area, residents dragged him out and continued to assault him. Police arrived at the scene and evacuated the victim, but he succumbed to his injuries. Police are currently investigating the alleged assault and motorcycle theft. A similar incident occurred in Lamongan, East Java, where MHS (30) from Tiwet Kalitengah and AP (29) from Kemlagigede Turi were allegedly beaten for stealing used scrap metal from a shop on Friday (June 24) around 14:00 WIB. AP claimed that residents suddenly approached them at the location, tied them up, and assaulted them. AP also stated that one individual, claiming to be the shop owner, threatened them with what appeared to be a firearm. AP reported being tied up, beaten, and doused with saltwater. The alleged scrap metal theft has been reported by the shop owner to the Lamongan Police. Concurrently, AP and MHS have also filed a report regarding the alleged mob assault against them at the Lamongan Police. Both reports are currently under police investigation. These incidents highlight a concerning trend of vigilantism across various Indonesian regions, raising questions about law enforcement effectiveness and public trust in the justice system.
