Ombudsman is not an 'arena' for mudslinging, execs warned

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla has warned that state officials using the Office of the Ombudsman as an 'arena' for mudslinging will face suspension. Remulla stated that feuding politicians filing cases against each other are wasting the public's time. He cited an incident in San Pablo City, Laguna, where the mayor and vice mayor were both placed under preventive suspension. Based on the Vice Mayor's complaint, the Ombudsman had suspended Mayor Arcadio Gapangada Jr. for alleged illegal hiring of job-order workers. A month later, the Vice Mayor, Justin Colago, was suspended after the Mayor accused him of signing papers for 'ghost employees.' Currently, the first councilor of San Pablo City, Carmela Acebedo, is serving as acting mayor. This situation highlights how power struggles in Philippine politics can lead to administrative stagnation and a decline in public services. The Ombudsman's office, intended to investigate misconduct and ensure accountability, risks having its authority undermined if used for personal vendettas or political maneuvering.
