Solon Urges Senate to Pass New Building Act Following President's Endorsement

MANILA, Philippines — Now that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. himself is throwing his support for the bill, Surigao del Sur Rep. Romeo Momo has urged the Senate to approve the proposed New Philippine Building Act (PBA). He believes this measure will enable buildings in the country to withstand calamities. In a statement on Wednesday, Momo hailed the President's support. "The President's endorsement is a significant boost to our efforts to pass the PBA, a vital piece of legislation that will ensure our buildings are resilient against natural disasters," Momo said. He emphasized that the PBA aims to address long-standing issues in Philippine infrastructure development. Current building standards have often proven insufficient against frequent earthquakes and typhoons, leading to significant damage. The proposed act is expected to introduce stricter seismic and wind-resistance standards, incorporating modern construction technologies to enhance building safety and durability. Given the Philippines' location in the Pacific Ring of Fire and its susceptibility to typhoons, the country faces constant natural disaster risks. Past events have resulted in numerous building collapses, casualties, and substantial economic losses. The passage of the PBA is seen as a crucial step in mitigating such damages and protecting lives and property. Momo reiterated his call for the Senate to expedite its deliberation and approval of the bill, recognizing its importance. "We are confident that the Senate will give this important measure the urgent attention it deserves," he added.
