Rare Sea Turtle Lays 101 Eggs on Hon Cau Island, Highlighting Vietnam's Biodiversity Conservation Efforts

In Vietnam's Lam Dong province, a rare sea turtle has been observed laying 101 eggs on Hon Cau Island, within the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area. This species, weighing over 90kg, is listed in Vietnam's Red Data Book. On September 12, the management board of the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area reported that the turtle, a critically endangered species, came ashore to find a nesting site. After two days on the island, it dug a nest approximately 0.5 meters deep at Ba Hon beach and laid 101 eggs. Once nesting was complete, the turtle covered the nest with sand and returned to the sea. Reserve staff subsequently relocated all the eggs to a protected incubation area near the control station. The eggs are placed in simulated natural nests within a fenced enclosure. Sea turtle eggs typically hatch within 45 to 60 days, depending on temperature. The reserve team will continue to monitor the hatchlings to assist their return to the ocean. This marks the fifth sea turtle nesting event recorded at the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area this year. Three of these nests were in safe locations and left undisturbed, while eggs from the other two required relocation for protection. Vietnam's government prioritizes biodiversity conservation and the protection of endangered species. Initiatives like the Hon Cau Marine Protected Area are crucial for safeguarding marine ecosystems. The country's one-party system oversees environmental policies, aligning with international conservation standards.
