SIM Cards Linked to Most Cybercrimes Despite Registration Law, PNP Reports

Despite the SIM Card Registration Act, nearly all cybercrimes in the country involve SIM cards, according to the Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG). PNP-ACG Director Police Major General Wilson Casil Asueta revealed this in a press conference on Tuesday, following the arrest of a 26-year-old man in Obando, Bulacan, on August 24. The arrest was made amid rising cybercrime incidents and the ongoing misuse of SIM cards for criminal activities. The SIM Card Registration Act, which took effect on December 26, 2023, was intended to curb the misuse of mobile phones and prevent criminal acts. However, the PNP's latest revelation raises questions about the law's effectiveness. It suggests that criminals may still be obtaining registered SIM cards illegally, using false personal information for registration, or utilizing unregistered SIM cards. Cybercrimes such as phishing, online scams, and data breaches have been on the rise in the Philippines in recent years. Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and the general public within the Philippines are often targets of these crimes. Scams conducted via social media and messaging apps are particularly serious issues, and law enforcement agencies are struggling to track down and apprehend perpetrators. This situation highlights the progress of digitalization in the Philippines and the accompanying lag in security measures. The government is urged to further strengthen the SIM Card Registration Act, expand public awareness campaigns, and enhance technological and human resources for cybercrime prevention.
