Thailand and Laos Discuss Road Transport Efficiency, GPS Mandate for Foreign Trucks Set for 2027

Thailand and Laos are engaged in close discussions aimed at enhancing the efficiency and safety of road transport that crosses their borders. A particular focus of the recent discussions was the reaffirmed commitment to mandate the installation of GPS (Global Positioning System) for foreign-registered cargo vehicles, effective from 2027 (Thai Buddhist Era 2570). This measure is expected to contribute to faster logistics and reduced costs by increasing cargo traceability and optimizing transport routes. Discussions also reportedly covered the simplification of transport permit procedures between the two countries and the mutual utilization of road infrastructure. The goal is to shorten waiting times at the border and build a smoother logistics network. Thailand is strengthening its position as a logistics hub in the Southeast Asian region, and cooperation with neighboring countries is key to its economic growth. The current discussions between Thailand and Laos can be considered a significant step towards strengthening the regional supply chain.
