CDO Gov’t Backs Campaign for Accessible Solar Power
Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines, has backed the nationwide campaign 'Sayang ang Araw, Gawing Mura ang Solar' to promote accessible and affordable solar power. The city government will collaborate on policy formulation and incentives to enable residents and businesses to harness solar energy.
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The nationwide campaign to make rooftop solar power capacity more accessible and affordable has gained the support of the local government here. At the culmination of the observance of Environment Month, the city government also spearheaded the local launch of the campaign “Sayang ang Araw, Gawing Mura ang Solar,” a nationwide initiative led locally by the Consumers for Renewable Energy Action in Mindanao (Cream). The campaign encourages households, businesses, and communities to harness the abundant power of the sun as a practical and affordable clean energy solution. “We continue to work with our partners in the civil society and business sector to promote renewable energy,” said Elvisa Mabelin, acting manager of the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro). Mabelin acknowledged nongovernmental organizations and advocacy groups for helping Clenro integrate renewable energy promotion and energy transition into their work. “Nongovernment organizations like the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) and advocacy groups like the Cream project and Mindanao Goes Solar Movement have been with us as partners and mentors,” Mabelin said. The ICSC is providing technical assistance to the local government in formulating the Local Energy Plan and Renewable Energy Roadmap. Advocates underscored the local government’s critical role in making solar energy accessible to people across social classes, describing it as “game-changing.” “We will be working with the local government to craft a policy that would provide incentives for renewable energy investments and in the installation of rooftop solar energy systems in key City Hall buildings,” said BenCyrus Ellorin, Cream project director. The “Sayang ang Araw, Gawing Mura ang Solar” campaign seeks to accelerate rooftop solar adoption as a practical pathway to energy independence, affordability and resilience. It was launched on the eve of the 128th Philippine Independence Day at the Quezon City Memorial Circle.
