Indonesia Joins UN Cybercrime Convention, Bolstering International Cooperation

The Indonesian government has signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, officially joining the global effort to combat cybercrime. The convention, formally known as the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime; Strengthening International Cooperation for Combating Certain Crimes Committed by Means of Information and Communications Technology Systems and for the Sharing of Evidence in Electronic Form of Serious Crimes, aims to enhance international cooperation in tackling crimes committed through information and communication technologies. Foreign Minister Sugiono signed the convention on behalf of the Indonesian government at the UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday, September 24, 2026. With this signature, Indonesia joins over 90 other parties that have signed the convention, three of which have already ratified it. The Cybercrime Convention is the first UN framework convention to globally regulate the prevention and eradication of cybercrime, serving as a foundation for international cooperation in addressing cross-border cybercrimes. Indonesia played an active role throughout the convention's negotiation process, from the establishment of the Ad Hoc Committee in 2019 to the convention's adoption on December 24, 2024, acting as both a negotiator and rapporteur through its representative in Vienna, Austria. For Indonesia, the convention is crucial for strengthening national efforts in preventing and criminalizing cyber offenses. It will also serve as a basis for Indonesian law enforcement agencies to bolster international cooperation against cybercrimes, including online scams, online gambling, and child pornography. The Indonesian government will now proceed with the ratification process and other necessary steps for the convention's implementation within the national legal framework. The convention itself will enter into force on the ninetieth day after the fortieth instrument of ratification, acceptance, approval, or accession has been deposited.
