DepEd Kicks Off National Teachers' Month, Highlighting Welfare Reforms

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) has kicked off the celebration of National Teachers’ Month, an annual event dedicated to honoring and supporting educators across the nation. The month-long observance, which began yesterday and will run until October 5, carries the theme, “Teacher, Ikaw Naman.” During the kick-off event in Cagayan de Oro, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara expressed gratitude for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s initiatives aimed at improving teachers’ welfare. "We thank President Bongbong Marcos for everything he has done for our teachers. If it is possible, our President would give it. That is also the philosophy of the Department of Education: to give what we could give to our teachers," Angara stated. Addressing recent concerns about school safety, Angara commended teachers for their dedication and their role in making schools nurturing environments, akin to a "second home" for students. He emphasized that in the age of artificial intelligence, human connection remains paramount, highlighting the importance of a warm hug, a pat on the shoulder, or simply calling a student by name. He reiterated that a whole-of-society effort is crucial to support both educators and learners. As part of the celebration, McDonald’s Philippines turned over 50 reclassified chairs, repurposed from retired restaurant assets, to East City Central School. The event also included meal donations, interactive exhibits, and raffle prizes for attendees. First Lady Liza Marcos delivered a special video message, acknowledging the sacrifices, patience, and heart teachers put into their profession daily. She thanked teachers for their unwavering commitment to shaping the nation's future. DepEd has implemented policy reforms to enhance working conditions nationwide. Under the Expanded Career Progression (ECP) System, over 93,000 teachers and school heads have been promoted, creating clearer professional pathways. To alleviate administrative stress, the department has reduced the required regular school paperwork from 174 forms to just five, allowing teachers to focus more on student instruction and mentorship. Financial and medical benefits for teachers have also been expanded. The non-taxable annual teaching allowance has doubled from P5,000 to P10,000 under the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act. Additionally, teachers now receive an annual medical allowance of up to P7,000, five days of paid annual wellness leave, and expanded vacation service credits capped at 30 days per year.
