800 Displaced by Floods in Northern Vietnam Find Shelter in Schools

Following flash floods in Muong Than commune, Lai Chau Province, northern Vietnam, over 800 residents have been displaced and are now living in a primary school. After the flash flood on July 17, which resulted in 4 deaths and 4 missing persons, continuous rainfall heightened the risk of landslides. Consequently, on the evening of July 18, more than 800 residents from Noong Thang village in Muong Than commune, approximately 2 km from the affected area, were evacuated to Pac Ta Primary School in Pac Ta commune. The displaced residents are utilizing classrooms, teacher accommodations, and student dormitories at the school for their temporary living arrangements. Each classroom accommodates 15-20 people, with furniture cleared to make space for bedding and essential supplies. While the initial days of evacuation were disruptive, life in the temporary shelters is gradually stabilizing. Residents, relying on aid, are supporting each other and striving to overcome this difficult period. Authorities are conducting disinfection of the shelters and common areas to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of diseases. According to Mr. Do Dinh Dinh, Chairman of the Pac Ta Commune People's Committee, authorities have ensured the reception of evacuated residents, provided accommodation, and supplied essential necessities. During the day, some residents leave the shelters to work and maintain their income, returning in the evening.
