Cambodian Authorities Seize 22 Monkeys Smuggled from Thailand

Cambodian authorities have seized 22 monkeys that were being smuggled from Thailand into the country near the border in Malai District, Banteay Meanchey Province. The operation took place on the night of July 27, 2026, in Santi Phap Village, Tuol Pong Commune, Malai District. According to officials, the crackdown was led by Lang Borin, Deputy Commander of the Malai District Gendarmerie, who directed forces from the district command. The operation resulted in the arrest of five individuals and the confiscation of one car and three motorcycles carrying the 20 adult monkeys and 2 young ones, which were being transported from Thailand into Cambodia. The suspects and the seized animals have been handed over to the Malai District Police Inspectorate for further legal proceedings. This seizure underscores the Cambodian government's commitment to strengthening its efforts against illegal cross-border wildlife trafficking. Cambodia shares a lengthy border with Thailand, which has historically served as a conduit for various smuggling activities, including narcotics, weapons, and wildlife.
