Authorities Order Emergency Evacuation of Homes from Myanmar Refugee Camp in Mizoram within 7 Days

Local authorities have suddenly ordered 45 households of Myanmar refugees taking shelter at Sihhmui Camp-II near Aizawl city in India's Mizoram state to vacate their homes within a week, according to the refugees. This action was taken after it was found that these 45 households were located within the boundary area of a highway expansion project on the western side of Aizawl. "There are about 100 households in that refugee camp. About 45 of them have been ordered to vacate by the district judge because they are not clear of the road area. In addition to the houses, the community hall and churches are also included," a refugee told Ayeyarwaddy Times. According to the order, the refugees are required to completely remove their homes and belongings within seven days and leave the area. It is understood that if the deadline is exceeded, they will be forcibly removed with the help of the police force, and the costs will be borne by the residents. Furthermore, authorities have warned that a fine of up to 10,000 rupees will be imposed, and an additional fine of up to 5,000 rupees per day will be collected for exceeding the specified date. "It is not easy to move within 7 days. We have to demolish and rebuild, which will take at least a month. Therefore, we are requesting for about a month's time. Some people are already moving," another refugee added. It is understood that the refugees who are currently required to relocate are facing financial difficulties in purchasing bamboo, corrugated iron, and other construction materials to rebuild their homes in a new location and are in need of urgent assistance. These refugees are local residents who fled to India due to the fighting that occurred in Matupi Township, Chin State.
