Cambodian Authorities Crack Down on Online Scams, Arresting Numerous Foreigners in Banteay Meanchey
Cambodian authorities have raided four locations suspected of operating online scams in Banteay Meanchey province, arresting numerous foreigners. Seized evidence includes a large number of computers and mobile phones, which have been handed over for further investigation.
Authorities in Serei Saophoan City, Banteay Meanchey province, have cracked down on four locations suspected of operating online scams, arresting numerous foreigners. The operation, which took place on July 3rd, was led by joint forces including officials such as Hul Raya, Ly Sovannarith, and Chhoeun Kraiyong, representing Governor Oum Ratry, alongside Serei Saophoan City Governor Sreng Sophoal. Expert forces from the provincial police, gendarmerie, and Serei Saophoan City Police participated, with procedural coordination from Deputy Prosecutors Mut Sambath and Kong Rotana. According to a report from the Serei Saophoan City Police Inspectorate, the first location in Chak village, Preah Ponlea commune, saw 129 individuals apprehended, including 122 Indonesians (30 female), 3 Chinese, and 4 Cambodian males. Seized items included 150 all-in-one computers and 220 mobile phones. Ten of these computers were handed over to the Cyber Crime Department for forensic analysis. Other seized items were stored at the provincial hall warehouse, and the site was temporarily sealed. All foreign nationals were sent to the Kngva Center in Serei Saophoan City for further legal proceedings. A second location, a house within the Chinese Market Black compound in Kbal Spean village, Preah Ponlea commune, yielded 31 foreigners (including 2 Cambodians) and various equipment suspected of being used in criminal activities. The owner of these two locations, Lim Mao, also known as Sieng Hai (49 years old), is currently being sought by authorities. A third location, a rented house near Golden Town in Kbal Spean village, Preah Ponlea commune, resulted in the apprehension of 4 foreigners who were subsequently sent to the Kngva Center. On the same day, authorities also inspected a site in Kampong Svay village, Kampong Svay commune, Serei Saophoan City. Here, 26 individuals were found, comprising 25 Chinese nationals and 1 Myanmar national. Seized items included 46 all-in-one computers and 174 assorted mobile phones.
