Thailand Eyes Used Tire Recycling Tech Amid Strict Pollution Control

An expert from Mahidol University in Thailand has commented on the potential and challenges of used tire recycling technologies, particularly pyrolysis. The expert emphasized that while used tire recycling is feasible, it requires strict control over potential pollution generated during the process. Specifically, the view was expressed that pyrolysis technology is not inherently dangerous if international standards and domestic environmental regulations are adhered to, with appropriate facilities and operations. This technology involves heating used tires at high temperatures to break them down into useful resources such as oil, gas, and carbon. However, risks of emitting harmful substances and causing bad odors have also been pointed out if the process is managed improperly. As the Thai government aims to enhance environmental protection and waste management, the introduction of such recycling technologies is expected to be accompanied by stringent environmental assessments and regulations. Standardization of the technology and the establishment of a supervisory system for operators implementing it will likely be key focal points moving forward.
