Over 2,500 Counterfeit Luxury Clothing Items Seized in Hanoi Warehouse, Young Man Arrested

In Hanoi, 2,575 counterfeit clothing items bearing well-known brands such as D&G and Gucci have been seized from a warehouse, leading to the arrest of a 22-year-old man. The suspect admitted to importing these fake garments, which he purchased for approximately VND 100,000 (around $4 USD) each, with the intention of selling them in the market for a profit of VND 10,000-15,000 (around $0.4-$0.6 USD) per item. The man, a resident of Bac Ninh province, has been charged by the Hanoi City Police's Investigation Agency with infringing industrial property rights. He confessed to knowing that the goods he acquired were counterfeit. On June 23, Phù Đổng Commune Police, in coordination with market management forces, conducted a surprise inspection of the suspect's business premises. Inside, authorities discovered clothing items for men and women falsely branded as D&G, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Nike, and Adidas – all brands protected in Vietnam. In total, 2,575 infringing products were found, with an estimated market value of over VND 264 million (approximately $10,500 USD) based on listed prices. Each product was valued at around VND 100,000. None of the seized goods possessed invoices or documents proving their origin. Representatives from the brands, along with an industrial property rights appraisal from the National Intellectual Property Institute, have confirmed that the items are indeed counterfeit. This incident underscores the persistent issue of counterfeit goods and intellectual property rights violations within Vietnam. Despite the government's increasing efforts to strengthen IP protection in line with international standards, driven by economic growth, the trade in imitations remains a significant challenge.
