Lai Chau Ginseng Development Gains Momentum

The cultivation and development of the endemic Ngoc Linh ginseng (Panax vietnamensis) are gaining momentum in Lai Chau province, Vietnam. Found exclusively in the Ngoc Linh mountain range at elevations of 1,500–2,100 metres, this rare medicinal plant is increasingly recognized for its unique properties and significant economic value. According to Dr. Tran Minh Ngoc, Director of the National Institute of Medicinal Materials under the Ministry of Health, Ngoc Linh ginseng is a species endemic to Vietnam, with its habitat strictly limited. The challenging terrain of the mountainous region, including rugged paths that can become slippery in rainy weather, makes accessing the cultivation areas difficult. However, this very challenge contributes to the ginseng's rarity and high quality. The Vietnamese government is seeking to secure new sources of economic growth through the development of high-value agricultural products like Ngoc Linh ginseng. This initiative is expected to contribute to the diversification of export industries and improve income levels in rural areas. Globally, interest in natural health products and pharmaceuticals is on the rise, and Ngoc Linh ginseng possesses the potential to meet this demand. Vietnam has been focusing on strengthening its export strategy amid its sustained economic growth. For instance, the Vietnam-EFTA Free Trade Agreement fosters complementary economic ties between EFTA members, strong in technology, innovation, finance, and clean energy, and Vietnam, a dynamic Asian economy. Bilateral economic ties with Canada, Vietnam's largest trading partner in ASEAN, are also expanding into areas such as clean energy and advanced technology. The development of Ngoc Linh ginseng aligns with Vietnam's broader economic development strategy. It aims not just for raw product exports but also for building stronger brands, increasing competitiveness, and establishing a lasting presence in international markets, as outlined in the "GoGlobal Programme." Lessons learned from South Korea's smart agriculture development model and the strategic positioning of French cheese maker Bel in Vietnam highlight Vietnam's proactive approach to incorporating international expertise and investment for industrial upgrading. Vietnam's active participation in the WTO agenda and its support for promoting inclusive and balanced global trade can provide a diplomatic foundation for introducing regional specialties like Ngoc Linh ginseng to the international market. The call for expanded investment and cooperation with Indian groups like ACME Group and GMR Group in clean energy and high-tech sectors further demonstrates Hanoi's ambition to attract investment in strategic areas. The development of Ngoc Linh ginseng is likely to be pursued as part of Vietnam's economic policies under its one-party system. It represents an effort to embody Vietnam's long-standing goals of achieving sustained economic growth while effectively utilizing domestic resources and enhancing international competitiveness.
