Vietnam's Role in Southeast Asia's Economic Growth Highlighted
Vietnam is poised to leverage its position as an ASEAN partner country to diversify external ties and better align with emerging growth drivers, according to forecasts for Southeast Asia's six largest economies. This highlights Vietnam's potential to play a crucial role in the region's economic landscape.
Southeast Asia's six largest economies are forecast to grow at an annual rate of 4.8% through 2035, with Vietnam expected to play a significant role in this regional economic expansion. S.D. Pradhan, former Deputy National Security Advisor of India, highlighted Vietnam's active participation and practical contributions as a partner country at the 18th BRICS summit, noting that this status offers Vietnam an opportunity to diversify its external ties and better align with emerging drivers of growth. As a member of ASEAN, Vietnam contributes to the region's economic integration and development. Ties between ASEAN and China have developed strongly since dialogue relations were established in 1991, making it one of ASEAN's most substantive and dynamic dialogue partnerships. Peng Qinghua, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, also stated that China and ASEAN are good neighbors, friends, and partners sharing a common future, underscoring the importance of their cooperative relationship. Under its one-party system, Vietnam prioritizes economic growth and improving citizens' livelihoods. The government focuses on attracting foreign investment and promoting exports. Vietnam has achieved remarkable economic growth, particularly in manufacturing, with growth rates among the highest in ASEAN. While this growth has contributed to job creation and the expansion of the middle class, it has also brought challenges such as widening economic disparities and environmental issues. Regarding its relationship with China, Vietnam, due to historical and geographical proximity, has a high degree of economic interdependence but also harbors security concerns. Vietnam continues diplomatic efforts to maintain good relations with China while ensuring its economic and political independence. The ASEAN framework plays a crucial role in helping Vietnam manage its relationship with China and enhance its regional influence. This forecast suggests that Vietnam will continue to be a driving force for Southeast Asia's economic growth, drawing attention from the international community.
