Majority of Forest Fire Suspects Allegedly Intentionally Burned, Legislator Demands Strict Punishment

Regarding the frequent forest fires (Karhutla) occurring in Indonesia, it has emerged that the majority of suspects are allegedly responsible for intentionally setting the fires. In response to this situation, Member of Parliament Sahroni has strongly urged that severe punishment be imposed, including on the masterminds (bohirnya) behind the fires. Forest fires frequently occur in Indonesia, particularly during the dry season, causing severe air pollution and economic losses. It is often pointed out that these fires are intentionally set for purposes such as agricultural land expansion or oil palm plantation development. Legislator Sahroni asserts that not only the perpetrators who directly set the fires but also the instigators and organizations behind them should face the heaviest penalties in accordance with the law. This is believed to be a strong indication of the will to address the root causes of the fires and prevent recurrence. MP Sahroni's statement suggests that as the Indonesian government strengthens its monitoring systems and law enforcement in its forest fire prevention efforts, calls for stricter penalties are intensifying.
