Cambodia: 38 Youths Apprehended for Late-Night Loitering, Concerns Over Drunk Driving and Drug Use

In Cambodia's Kampong Speu province, approximately 38 youths from 12 different groups were apprehended by police in Baset district for loitering late at night. The operation, aimed at maintaining public order and fostering the healthy development of youth, highlights potential social issues. According to local police, the detentions occurred between 11 PM on July 25 and 2 AM on July 26. Baset district police, in cooperation with 15 local police posts, conducted mobile patrols and intercepted the groups, confiscating 20 motorcycles. Authorities expressed concern over the youths' unsupervised late-night activities. Among those apprehended, several individuals are suspected of drunk driving and drug use. Notably, in the 9th group detained, a white crystalline powder suspected to be drugs was found. The presence of numerous minors among the apprehended individuals also raises concerns about their future well-being and potential societal impact. The police provided educational guidance to the detained youths and had them sign pledges to cease such activities. The fact that many of them originated from different provinces, including Takeo and the capital Phnom Penh, suggests a need for broader inter-provincial cooperation and countermeasures. This incident sheds light on the reality of youth activities at night in Cambodia and the associated potential risks.
