Cambodia Launches New Bulk Shipping Channel to Boost Rice Exports to Philippines

PHNOM PENH, Sept. 16, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has launched a new bulk-shipping arrangement to transport rice directly to the Philippines, aiming to expand waterway export capacity, cut logistics costs and strengthen competitiveness in the international market, officials said Wednesday. Agriculture Minister Dith Tina presided over the inauguration of the 10,000-tonne bulk shipment between Cambodian exporter City Rice and Philippine firm Dilai Trading at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. The new system adds to container shipping, with bulk carriers expected to improve efficiency, reduce costs and ensure stable supply to the Philippine market. Officials said the launch followed guidance from Prime Minister Hun Manet, with close coordination from the port authority. Cambodia exported 122,102 tonnes of rice to the Philippines in the first eight months of 2026, accounting for more than 15 percent of total shipments. A further 87,344 tonnes have been contracted for delivery by year-end, bringing exports to around 209,446 tonnes. The Philippines is emerging as a key growth market, supporting Cambodia’s target of surpassing 1 million tonnes of rice exports in 2026, above the record 940,321 tonnes achieved last year. Officials said the bulk-carrier launch reflects growing government-to-government and private-sector cooperation, helping expand market access and strengthen food security.
