Hanoi Establishes Inter-Agency Mechanism for Carbon Market Operations

Hanoi has established an inter-agency mechanism to operate the country's first carbon market, according to a decision by the municipal People’s Committee. Under this decision, relevant departments and agencies will be responsible for identifying facilities subject to greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, developing emissions reduction plans, and studying projects capable of generating carbon credits. This initiative signifies Vietnam's commitment to contributing to international climate change mitigation goals. The nation has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and the development of a carbon market is a crucial step towards this objective. The Vietnamese government, operating under a one-party system, aims to balance economic growth with environmental protection, making the introduction of such market mechanisms a strategic policy for promoting sustainable development.
