Indonesian Rights Law Reform: Over a Quarter Century Debate Nears End?

In Indonesia, voices of support are rising for the revision of the Human Rights Law (Undang-Undang Hak Asasi Manusia, UU HAM), a bill that has been debated for over a quarter of a century. Activists from Bakumsu (Bela Kemanusiaan Sumatera Utara) and academics from North Sumatra University (USU) have expressed their support for this legal reform. This move could provide new momentum to the long-stalled legislative process. The Indonesian Human Rights Law was enacted in 1999. Since then, multiple attempts have been made to amend it to align with evolving international human rights standards and domestic socio-political changes, but these efforts have not yet materialized.
