Cambodian Environment Minister Pushes Green Leisure Development in Protected Areas
Cambodia's Minister of Environment has announced plans to promote sustainable green leisure development, inspired by a visit to a nature reserve in China. The initiative aims to strengthen natural resource protection and conservation, while also boosting local economies and improving community livelihoods through measures like distributing saplings to citizens.
His Excellency Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, has spoken about promoting the sustainable development of green leisure destinations, aiming to generate benefits and improve the livelihoods of people in local communities. The Ministry of Environment announced on September 19, 2026, that a key direction for green leisure destination development is to strengthen the sustainable protection and conservation of natural resources, and to increase green cover by promoting the distribution of saplings to citizens for planting each year. The Minister's remarks were made while leading a high-level Cambodian delegation on a recent visit to the Qingxiu Mountain Scenic Area in Nanning City, Guangxi Province, China. The purpose of this visit was to learn more about promoting innovation in the management of green leisure areas and enhancing the potential of natural tourism in protected areas in Cambodia. The Qingxiu Mountain Resort Area, praised as the "Green Lung" of Nanning City, is a model green leisure area that perfectly blends the conservation of natural resources with local economic development. This location is covered by lush forest, features picturesque mountain scenery, a diverse ecosystem, and a rich botanical garden, along with aesthetically pleasing infrastructure. The area's prominence lies in its transformation of natural resources into green leisure spaces that attract a large number of domestic and international tourists. The Ministry of Environment is implementing concrete strategic activities to further strengthen the implementation of the environmental sector's "Chakra" strategy, particularly by promoting the potential of the circular economy within local communities through the development of natural tourism structures in Cambodia. The Ministry of Environment remains committed to ensuring the conservation of ecosystems, strict law enforcement, and the improvement of people's livelihoods to achieve positive results and a truly clean, green, and sustainable future in Cambodia.
