Indonesia has joined the World Artificial Intelligence Ethics Organization (WAICO) as a founding member, an initiative aimed at fostering the development and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI). The organization seeks to oversee the ethical, social, and legal aspects of AI development and application amidst rapid technological advancements. Indonesia's participation aims to strengthen its domestic AI research and development capabilities and contribute to international AI governance frameworks. In recent years, Indonesia has shown increasing interest in AI technology, coinciding with the growth of its digital economy. The government has been formulating AI strategies and developing related infrastructure. Through its membership in WAICO, Indonesia intends to build an international cooperation framework to maximize the benefits of AI technology while managing its potential risks. While the rapid advancement of AI holds the potential to contribute to economic growth and the resolution of societal issues, it also raises ethical challenges such as privacy violations, bias, and job displacement. WAICO plans to work on developing international standards and best practices to address these challenges. Indonesian Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, stated that Indonesia's participation in WAICO signifies its commitment to actively engage in global discussions on AI and lead responsible AI development.
