Phu Quoc Canoe Capsize: Authorities Pledge Support for Victims

On July 12, Mr. Ho Van Mung, Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee, chaired a meeting with representatives from central ministries to assess the situation and plan future actions. To date, the bodies of 15 deceased tourists have been transported to Ha Tien city and will subsequently be moved to Ho Chi Minh City for handover to their families, as per the request of the Indian Consulate. Of the 17 tourists who fortunately survived, 16 have been discharged from the Phu Quoc hospital and are recovering well. One tourist with a pre-existing cardiac condition is receiving intensive treatment with professional support from doctors at Cho Ray Hospital and is currently in stable condition. Local authorities have pledged financial support of approximately 90 million VND (around $3,500 USD) for each deceased victim and about 13 million VND (around $500 USD) for each survivor. They have also committed to covering all related medical and logistical expenses. Chairman Ho Van Mung instructed the Provincial Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident and to strictly handle any individuals or organizations found to be in violation. Furthermore, he urged relevant agencies to tighten safety management for water transportation, mandating that no vessel be permitted to depart without fully meeting all safety, life jacket, and technical requirements. "We will use all measures to preserve and transport the bodies for handover to the next of kin," stated Chairman Mung. "We will continue to provide maximum assistance to the surviving victims. The province will closely coordinate with relevant ministries and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Foreign Affairs to offer the utmost convenience and financial support to their families during their stay in the city to receive the bodies."
