Thai Lawmaker Confronts Education Official Over Laughter During Budget Debate

BANGKOK, Thailand – A parliamentary budget committee meeting turned tense after lawmaker Veera Dhirapatranon publicly confronted an Education Ministry official he accused of laughing during his remarks on Thailand’s teacher shortage and education system. The exchange took place on Aug. 4 during a meeting of the House committee reviewing the proposed 2027 national budget for the Ministry of Education. While questioning senior ministry officials and the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) about teacher staffing levels, Weera stressed the importance of maintaining reasonable teacher-to-student ratios, arguing that teachers responsible for too many students cannot provide adequate care and attention. Recalling his own school days more than 60 years ago, the veteran politician was interrupted by laughter from officials seated in the meeting room. “What are you laughing at?” Weera asked, turning toward an official seated near the permanent secretary. “I’m speaking seriously. I’m not insulting anyone, but you’re laughing at me. I’m angry. I can’t even continue.” He went on to say that Thailand’s education challenges extend beyond teacher numbers, describing them as systemic problems involving both personnel and administration that require comprehensive reform. The incident briefly disrupted the committee’s deliberations before discussions on the Education Ministry’s budget resumed.
