Three men who abducted a police officer assigned to security at the Mon State Hluttaw with the intention of selling him as a fisherman have been charged under four sections of the Penal Code, including the Anti-Human Trafficking Law, it has been learned. According to reports, the incident occurred around 4:30 PM on June 19, when Police Sergeant Zaw Win Htun, a member of the police force assigned to security at the Mon State Hluttaw in Mawlamyine city, went to pay respects at the Naga Mauk Pagoda on Taung Yoe Tan Hill in Mawlamyine city. While sitting alone on the pagoda platform, three unidentified men approached him and asked him to accompany them. When Police Sergeant Zaw Win Htun explained that he could not go as he was a police officer, one of the three men said, "What police? I am a Major," and slapped Police Sergeant Zaw Win Htun twice on the ear before forcibly restraining and abducting him. It is reported that the man claiming to be a Major then rode a motorcycle, with another man sitting behind him, and they were taken to Kyaukme city in Thanbyuzayat Township, with the remaining man following separately on another motorcycle. Around 8 PM, they were forcibly taken to the home of a fisherman broker named Tin Zar Lwin in Kyaukme city. Subsequently, when Police Sergeant Zaw Win Htun demanded the advance payment of 1.2 million kyats that the man claiming to be a Major and his group had instructed him to pay, Tin Zar Lwin sensed something was wrong and directed Police Sergeant Zaw Win Htun to the Kyaukme police station. Upon arriving at the police station, Police Sergeant Zaw Win Htun informed the responsible officials of the incident. Following this, a team led by Police Officer San Ko Ko U, the station chief of the Kyaukme territorial police station, went to investigate the home of the fisherman broker Tin Zar Lwin. There, they found Tin Than in possession of a soldier recruitment verification card (for the Army Recruitment Unit (Mawlamyine) under the name of Tin Than, which is currently being examined to determine if it is forged or genuine), along with a HONDA CLICK 125 motorcycle with license plate 82Ya/75826 and a HONDA WAVE 110 motorcycle with license plate 35Ya/34784. They were then arrested and taken to the territorial police station in Kyaukme city at 9:15 PM. It has been reported that Tin Than, aged 51, residing in the Butagyi compound, Myenigone Ward, Mawlamyine city; Tin Min Htut, aged 46, residing in Zawgone village, Kyain village tract, Mawlamyine city; and Phyo Ko Ko, aged 38, residing in the Butagyi compound, Myenigone Ward, Mawlamyine city, have been charged at the Kyaukme territorial police station under sections 170/332/342/114 of the Penal Code in case (Pa) 33/2026, and are being investigated under sections 36/44 of the Anti-Human Trafficking Law in case (Pa) 32/2026.

Women's land ownership and access rights in Myanmar continue to be a complex and difficult issue due to laws, social customs, war, and economic conditions, according to a review published on June 23 by the Netherlands-based Transnational Institute (TNI). The report, titled “Why is Women’s Access to Land So Complex in Myanmar? ”, analyzes that women in Myanmar face various obstacles in accessing land ownership, usage rights, and benefits from land. According to cases cited in the report, it was found that women are losing land-related rights because their names are not included in official land registration documents, even though they participate equally with men in agricultural work. The report states that difficulties for women increase when family situations change due to the death of a husband, divorce, or war. TNI's analysis indicates that while the 2012 Farmland Law and the Vacant, Fallow and Virgin Lands Management Law in Myanmar have legalized land ownership, customary land management systems in ethnic regions and women's rights have not been adequately considered. The report cites the 2017 Myanmar Poverty and Living Conditions Survey, which found that only 14.2 percent of women engaged in agriculture hold official land documents, compared to 32.1 percent of men. Furthermore, it is stated that many women in rural areas are unable to participate in land registration processes due to a lack of knowledge about land rights, literacy challenges, and difficulties in understanding administrative procedures. The report points out that land should not be seen merely as an economically valuable asset, but as a system connected to food, water, firewood, medicinal plants, culture, and the survival of the community. It is stated that women, in particular, play a key role in finding food, caring for families, and conserving natural resources. At the same time, the report notes that while customary land management systems practiced in ethnic regions can protect women in some cases, patriarchal customs still persist in others. However, efforts to better protect women's land rights are seen in the land policies of Karen, Mon, and Karenni organizations. TNI recommends that discussions on women's land rights should include not only land ownership but also the ability to benefit from land, decision-making power, and participation in the community. In addition, TNI urges that land policies should be based on the practical life experiences of rural women workers, internally displaced persons, migrant workers, and those living within customary land systems.
