Cambodia, Malaysia Accelerate Defence Pact, Eyeing ASEAN Meeting Signing

PHNOM PENH, Aug 7, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Malaysia have agreed to accelerate preparations for a landmark defence cooperation agreement, aiming to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at a future ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) or ADMM‑Plus gathering in the Philippines. The plan was discussed during talks between Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin in Phnom Penh on Friday. The Cambodian Defence Ministry said both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding friendship and cooperation, particularly in defence, as the two countries prepare to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. Tea Seiha welcomed Khaled, who led a high‑level delegation from Malaysia’s Ministry of Defence on his first official visit to Cambodia. Both ministers described bilateral relations as built on trust and mutual understanding, and agreed to accelerate drafting of the MoU, which is expected to provide a framework for deeper cooperation. The two sides also discussed expanding collaboration in disaster relief, rescue operations, military medicine, United Nations peacekeeping missions and other areas of mutual interest. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening exchanges between young military officers, described as future leaders who can sustain long‑term relations between the two countries. The Cambodian and Malaysian delegations exchanged views on regional and international developments, praising ASEAN’s efforts to promote unity, resilience and cooperation in addressing shared challenges. They highlighted Malaysia’s role in supporting ASEAN centrality and regional efforts to maintain peace, stability and prosperity in Southeast Asia. The proposed MoU is expected to mark a milestone in Cambodia–Malaysia defence ties, providing a structured platform for cooperation as both nations confront evolving regional security concerns.
