Cambodia and Malaysia Plan Defense Cooperation MOU

Cambodia and Malaysia's defense ministers have agreed to aim for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the upcoming ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting, with the goal of further deepening military cooperation between the two nations. This agreement was confirmed during a meeting between Cambodian Minister of National Defense Tea Seiha and Malaysian Minister of Defence Dato Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin on August 7, 2026. The discussions highlighted key areas for cooperation, including the expansion of collaboration across all branches of the armed forces, joint training exercises, enhanced information sharing, and coordinated efforts to combat cross-border crime. Both ministers described the relationship between their countries as a "trustworthy, open, and sincere partnership." Furthermore, both Cambodia and Malaysia expressed a shared vision for cooperation in disaster relief, military medicine, United Nations peacekeeping operations, and the promotion of exchanges between young military officers, who are seen as future leaders. Malaysia's Minister of Defence is on a two-day visit to Cambodia, and this visit is expected to significantly contribute to strengthening bilateral ties and translating commitments into concrete actions, particularly in the defense sector.
