Romualdez behind bagmen’s tale, says Remulla; plunder raps unaffected

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla on Friday belittled the reported recantation of four of 18 alleged bagmen of former Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co, saying it won’t affect the plunder charges against former Speaker Martin Romualdez. He accused the Leyte congressman of being responsible for the men’s actions. The four men, who had previously claimed to be alleged bagmen for Co, had provided statements related to alleged corruption involving Romualdez and Co. However, they have since reportedly recanted their testimonies. Remulla suggested that the recantation was orchestrated by Romualdez, aiming to disrupt the investigation and conceal his involvement. The Ombudsman added that the alleged bagmen’s recantation indicates that Romualdez is either pressuring the investigators or coercing false testimony.
