This trip will be the second visit to an ASEAN member state by Min Aung Hlaing, who transitioned from military leader to interim president, since he officially took office in April. Sources have not yet disclosed the detailed itinerary for the visit to Thailand, a country that has been working to facilitate the junta's re-engagement with regional organizations. Military leader Min Aung Hlaing became the leader of the military-backed interim government after elections held in December and January. He also made his first visit to Laos, an ASEAN member state, earlier this month. Since the military coup in February 2021, ASEAN has barred Myanmar from attending its biannual summits. Specifically, ASEAN decided in October 2021 not to allow the junta to attend summits due to a lack of progress in implementing the "five-point consensus" drafted by ASEAN leaders after the coup. At an informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting held in Bangkok on July 12, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai urged interim government Foreign Minister U Tin Maung Swe to implement the ASEAN consensus. According to a statement from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Thai Foreign Minister met separately with interim government Minister U Tin Maung Swe on the sidelines of the meeting, and both sides reaffirmed their close neighborly relations.
