Cambodian King Urges Enhanced Support for Elderly and Vulnerable

PHNOM PENH, Sept 24, 2026 (KPT) — King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia has urged citizens to provide greater care and attention to the elderly, disabled, poor, and vulnerable populations within the country. The monarch called for authorities and the public alike to ensure these individuals have guaranteed access to food, care, and suitable accommodation. The appeal was made in a Royal Message issued on September 23, ahead of Cambodian Elderly Day and the International Day of Older Persons, both observed on October 1. The King stated that the annual observance is intended to promote public understanding of the value, dignity, rights, and role of older people in Cambodian society. He also acknowledged the contributions of previous generations who have helped build families and communities and pass on knowledge, traditions, and cultural practices. The monarch particularly encouraged younger generations to respect and care for their parents, grandparents, and other elderly relatives, noting the significant contributions older people have made by raising children, providing care, and supporting education. The King highlighted the importance of the knowledge and experience held by older generations, who have lived through different periods of Cambodia's history and witnessed changes in traditions, customs, and community life. He called for enhanced community-based care, including the establishment of elderly centers where appropriate, and suggested utilizing pagodas and other religious sites to provide shelter, food, and assistance. Such efforts, according to the message, would foster gratitude, respect, and family values, while strengthening social solidarity and enabling people of different generations to live together with dignity.
