Cambodia Urges Stronger UN Action for Peaceful Dispute Resolution

AKP Phnom Penh, July 24, 2026 -- Cambodia has called for renewed international commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes and stronger adherence to international law during a high-level debate at the United Nations Security Council. Speaking at the UN Security Council High-Level Open Debate on "Strengthening the mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes: follow-up to Security Council Resolution 2788 (2025)," in New York on July 23, H.E. Chhea Keo, Permanent Representative of Cambodia to the United Nations, reaffirmed Cambodia's longstanding commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means. The Cambodian Ambassador recalled that H.E. Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, had reaffirmed Cambodia's unwavering commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law during his address to the Security Council in May this year. H.E. Chhea Keo outlined four key priorities for strengthening international efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts. These include enhancing the United Nations' role in preventive diplomacy, ensuring that disputes are resolved through peaceful means and in compliance with decisions of the International Court of Justice, reinforcing the Security Council's unity and impartiality, and addressing the humanitarian consequences of Cambodia's ongoing border dispute. The Ambassador highlighted that more than 20,000 Cambodian civilians remain displaced as a result of the border situation, underscoring the need for continued international attention to its humanitarian impact. In concluding his remarks, H.E. Chhea Keo stressed that borders and national sovereignty must never be altered by force or through the creation of a fait accompli. By C. Nika
