UNESCO Supports Literacy Programs for Cambodian Factory Workers and Out-of-School Youth

UNESCO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, and other partners, has emphasized the importance of literacy in learning, work, and daily life. On September 8, UNESCO highlighted the significance of literacy in Cambodia through its Literacy Program for Factory Workers and Basic Level Equivalency Education Program. These initiatives aim to expand opportunities for garment factory workers and youth who have dropped out of school to build literacy skills, life skills, and confidence, thereby opening doors to lifelong learning and new prospects. For learners in the BEEP program, such as Ms. Soeum Theara, learning literacy and mathematics through the program's user-friendly online system has laid the foundation for vocational training in electricity. She is currently preparing for advanced certification exams to secure a decent job. For factory workers like Ms. Phap Sim, the FLP program has provided practical literacy skills that extend beyond factory work, enabling her to confidently read employment contracts and assist her children with homework.
