Prabowo Aims for Jakarta to Become a 'Green City,' Pushing for Vertical Gardens

President Prabowo Subianto has expressed his vision for Jakarta to become a model 'green city' in Indonesia, strongly advocating for the implementation of vertical gardens on its high-rise buildings. This directive was revealed on Wednesday (16/9/2026) during the inauguration of the LRT (Light Rail Transit) Jakarta's Gading-Manggarai route in Jakarta. The President explained that this initiative is part of a broader movement called 'Indonesia ASRI' (Aman, Sehat, Resik, dan Indah - Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful Indonesia), which he plans to officially launch in a meeting with all governors, regents, and regional representatives across Indonesia within the next one to two weeks. Regarding Jakarta, he stated, 'All tall buildings in Jakarta should be able to implement vertical gardens,' positioning urban greening as a top priority. He emphasized that if building owners face difficulties in adopting this concept, regional governments will provide assistance, and if necessary, the central government will also intervene. President Prabowo further suggested that not only Jakarta but also all other provincial capitals and regency seats should undergo similar transformations. He proposed that concrete measures such as waste reduction and river cleaning should be advanced using the latest technologies. According to a report from Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, the city's water bodies have already been cleaned, and the Governor's plans for developing jogging tracks and parks also received the President's support. Governor Pramono Anung pledged to immediately follow up on the President's instructions, stating that the installation of vertical gardens will be one of the most crucial programs to green Jakarta. The Governor also highlighted Jakarta's economic growth rate of 5.52% (this quarter) with inflation at 2.5%, and its 16.32% contribution to the national economy. He stressed the need to balance this economic achievement with more comfortable urban development, including strengthening public transportation and urban greening. The plan is to further advance Jakarta's transformation into a competitive global city as it approaches its 500th anniversary.
