KPK Detains Langkat Regent Bribery Suspect at Medan Police Due to Ticket Shortage

Achmad Taufik Husein, Acting Director of KPK Investigation, explained to reporters on Saturday that the KPK team had apprehended several individuals at different times and locations during a sting operation. However, logistical constraints, specifically the unavailability of flight tickets, prevented Yaqub's immediate transfer to Jakarta. "The private party that was not brought in was indeed because there were obstacles in the area," Husein stated. He further elaborated that after the follow-up processes were completed, all available seats on flights to Jakarta were occupied. "The last moments when he was brought in there were limitations on flight tickets so that the only thing that could be brought was the state organizer," he added, referring to Regent Syah Afandin. Consequently, Yaqub was temporarily housed at the Medan Police Detention House. Meanwhile, Regent Syah Afandin was successfully transported to Jakarta and is being held at the KPK Red and White Building Branch State Detention House (Rutan). As previously reported, the KPK has named Syah Afandin as a suspect for receiving bribes and Yaqub Abdhal Al Mu'arif as a suspect for giving bribes. These allegations are linked to projects within the Education Office and the Langkat Regency Housing and Residential Area (Perkim). Beyond the alleged project bribes, the KPK has also uncovered indications of other gratification received by Syah Afandin, valued at a minimum of IDR 3.5 billion. These allegations involve personnel mutations and appointments within the Langkat Regency Government, the selection of school principals, and the procurement of school uniforms, all of which are still under investigation. Syah Afandin is suspected of violating Article 12 letter a or letter b and/or Article 12B of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning Eradication of Corruption, as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001. Yaqub, as the alleged briber, is charged under Article 605 or Article 606 paragraph (1) of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, in conjunction with Law Number 1 of 2026 concerning Criminal Adjustment, and Article 20 letter c of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code.
