Jakarta DPRD Member Urges Focus on Basic Services Over Mega-Projects
A Jakarta City Council member, Jupiter, urged the provincial government to prioritize basic service issues like sanitation, road safety, and clean water access in densely populated areas over mega-infrastructure projects. Jupiter made these remarks after listening to residents' aspirations during a recess in RW 03 and RW 07, Keagungan Village, Taman Sari District, West Jakarta, on Thursday, July 2. He believes that Jakarta's development loses its meaning if the most basic needs of the community remain neglected. "Development must be felt by the residential area," Jupiter stated. Among the issues raised by residents in RW 07 was the request for the installation of speed bumps and convex mirrors at several points to mitigate accident risks due to high vehicle traffic. In response, Jupiter urged the DKI Jakarta Transportation Office to promptly install these road safety facilities, asserting that "the safety of residents must be a priority." Beyond safety concerns, Jupiter also highlighted the poor sanitation conditions in RW 03. According to residents' accounts, approximately 120 houses lack septic tanks, leading to household waste being directly discharged into the river. He argued that this situation is incompatible with Jakarta's ambition to be a global city, stating, "There are still residents who have not enjoyed decent sanitation. This must be a concern." Consequently, Jupiter called on the DKI Jakarta Water Resources Office and the DKI Jakarta Housing Office to allocate a budget for the construction of communal sanitation facilities in densely populated areas. He stressed that fulfilling basic services is the government's responsibility and cannot solely rely on corporate assistance through social responsibility programs. "The government must be present through programs and budgets, not just relying on CSR," he added. Jupiter revealed that similar sanitation problems were observed in areas such as Palmerah, South Sukabumi, and Serengseng. He expressed his hope that the equalization of basic services will become a priority in Jakarta's development, ensuring that the benefits of development are truly experienced by the community at the neighborhood level.
