Southern Thailand Poised for Logistics Revolution with 'Missing Link' Project

The government has affirmed that the Missing Link transport project, which includes the construction of a railway connecting Chumphon and Ranong provinces, will create economic opportunities in southern Thailand. Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek stated that the Chumphon–Ranong Port railway will enhance national logistics and support Thailand’s goal of becoming a regional transportation hub. The project will integrate rail, road, and port infrastructure to maximize existing assets. Planned work includes upgrading Ranong Port, dredging navigation channels, developing areas behind the port, improving road connections, and building the Chumphon–Ranong Port railway. The railway will connect the Ranong Gateway to Thailand’s main rail network and regional routes linking Thailand, Laos, China, Malaysia, and Singapore. The upgraded port will strengthen Andaman Sea trade with BIMSTEC markets, including Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka, and provide connections to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. The completed network is expected to reduce shipping times and costs, expand export options, and improve logistics for southern businesses. Feasibility studies and design work for the railway are complete. An environmental impact assessment must be finalized before the project is submitted to the Cabinet. If approved, construction is expected to take about three years. The spokesperson added that the government will continue to develop southern Thailand through tourism, agricultural processing, natural resource management, border economic development, and stronger regional links. The plan aligns with private-sector proposals to address transportation bottlenecks, enhance national competitiveness, and increase the value of existing infrastructure. (NNT)
