Thailand Scraps 'Land Bridge' Mega-Project, Shifts to 'Missing Link' Concept

Thailand's government has announced the cancellation of the 'Land Bridge' mega-project, a massive infrastructure initiative valued at 1 trillion baht (approximately $27 billion USD) aimed at connecting the Gulf of Thailand with the Andaman Sea. The project, heavily promoted by the Bhumjaithai Party, faced widespread opposition. An initial study committee, established by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, concluded that the 'Land Bridge' was not economically viable, posed investment risks, and was not aligned with the current situation, recommending its termination. Instead, the government plans to pursue the 'Missing Link' concept. This initiative focuses on enhancing and completing the country's existing land transportation and logistics networks, particularly improving rail connectivity. He noted that the 'Missing Link' concept is similar to what the Democrat Party had previously proposed with its 'Southern Connect' initiative. Mr. Veerayuth Kanchuchart, Deputy Leader of the People's Party, expressed hope that the cancellation of the 'Land Bridge' would mark the beginning of economic development in the South based on cost-effectiveness and public participation, while also urging vigilance against the potential inclusion of hidden projects and budgets. His party had previously proposed the 'Southern Port Link' strategy to upgrade southern ports and regional logistics. However, Mr. Prasitchai Nuannual, a leading figure in the civil society movement opposing the 'Land Bridge' and the Special Economic Zone Act, argued that the government's announcement does not signify the end of the concept of connecting the Gulf coast with the Andaman Sea. Instead, it represents a strategic adjustment, rebranding the initiative as 'Missing Link' to fill existing transportation gaps. He believes this change is aimed at reducing political and public pressure, while the core of infrastructure development remains. The shift from a single mega-project to a series of smaller, phased projects is seen as a way to streamline implementation. Mr. Prasitchai voiced concerns that this approach might lead to the relocation of port construction sites, the subdivision of projects, environmental impact assessments conducted through secondary legislation, and investment promotion measures that could bypass stricter regulations. He worries about the potential negative impacts on local communities, the environment, tourism, and the economy of the southern region. While the 'Land Bridge' project is officially halted, the push for the 'Missing Link' concept is likely to spark new debates.
