Cambodia Lodges New Protest over Thai Military’s Border Encroachments
The Cambodian government has formally protested to Thailand over alleged violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, citing recent Thai military activities including excavation and barbed wire installation near the border. Cambodia urges an immediate cessation of these actions and a peaceful resolution based on existing agreements.
The Royal Government of Cambodia has lodged another formal protest against Thailand over its continued violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity along the common border. According to a statement released on Saturday morning, Cambodian authorities said Thai armed forces carried out new activities between July 5 and 9, 2026, including excavating earth to build an earthen embankment and laying barbed wire near Boundary Pillar No. 14 in Sangkat O’Smach, Samraong city, Oddar Meanchey province. On July 9, Thai troops were also reported to have entered Cambodian territory to install barbed wire near Boundary Pillar No. 22 in Thmar Daun village, Kork Morn commune, Banteay Ampil district, Oddar Meanchey province. The Royal Government said the actions constitute a clear violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as defined by the 1:200,000-scale maps prepared by the Franco-Siamese Boundary Delimitation Commissions under the 1904 Franco-Siamese Convention and the 1907 Treaty. Cambodia further stated that the activities violate Article 5 of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding on the Survey and Demarcation of the Land Boundary between Cambodia and Thailand, as well as Points 2 and 6 of the de-escalation measures contained in the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) held on Dec. 27, 2025. The Royal Government reiterated that it does not recognise any boundary line or territorial claim unilaterally asserted by Thailand and stressed that the recent activities would not prejudice Cambodia’s legal rights or position regarding its international boundary. Cambodia urged Thailand to immediately cease such activities not only in the areas concerned but also in all other areas that have been unlawfully occupied by Thai forces since last year. It said such steps are essential to de-escalate tensions, build mutual trust, facilitate the peaceful settlement of disputes, and restore peace, stability, and good-neighbourly relations along the shared border. The Royal Government reaffirmed its commitment to resolving all boundary disputes with Thailand, as with all neighbouring countries, exclusively through peaceful means in accordance with international law and existing bilateral agreements, while maintaining its principled position that international borders must not be altered by force.
