President visits Phontong Handicrafts Cooperation

President U Min Aung Hlaing and wife Daw Kyu Kyu Hla visited the Phontong Handicrafts Cooperation and Cama Crafts, a leading small and medium-sized handicraft enterprise in Vientiane on Saturday. During the visit, the President and delegation observed the production of traditional Lao handicrafts, including handwoven silk textiles, embroidery, basketry and other handmade products. They were briefed on the production process, product development and marketing activities, and viewed displays showcasing the craftsmanship of Lao artisans. Founded in 1976, the Phontong Handicrafts Cooperative has grown into one of Laos' best-known handicraft organizations. It works with hundreds of artisans from more than 35 villages across the country, helping preserve traditional weaving and handicraft skills while creating sustainable livelihoods for rural communities. Since partnering with Cama Crafts in 1990, the organization has also supported Lao and Hmong women by providing training, employment and access to international markets for their handmade products. The visit highlighted the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises in preserving cultural heritage, creating jobs and promoting economic development, while also reflecting the growing cooperation between Myanmar and Laos in trade, industry and SME development.
