Phnom Penh's New Landfill to Operate in 2027, Meeting International Standards

Phnom Penh will commence operations at a new landfill in Angsnoul District, Kandal Province, on January 1, 2027. This new facility is intended to replace the current landfill located in Dangkor District. Deputy Governor Huot Hai stated during the 28th ordinary meeting of the Phnom Penh City Council on September 10 that the new landfill spans 143 hectares and its first phase of development has been completed to international standards. According to Deputy Governor Huot Hai, waste disposal fee revenue is projected to reach approximately $2 million per month. However, he noted that operational costs are expected to exceed this amount, resulting in a deficit. Currently, three waste collection and transportation companies are collecting about 4,100 tons of garbage daily, a significant increase from the 2,700 tons per day collected under the previous single-company system. Deputy Governor Huot Hai also praised the authorities and forces of Phnom Penh for their effective crackdown on online scams (ONLINE SCAMS), attributing the success to the initiative of each district and the excellent cooperation from residents. Furthermore, he highlighted Phnom Penh's award from the World Health Organization (WHO) for its efforts to promote traffic safety through the implementation of the project "Safe and Active Transport, Health Promotion, and Reduction of Inequality in Urban Mobility." He stated that this award is a result of the collective efforts of the City Council, City Hall, districts, communes, and relevant departments. These remarks were made in response to commendations from Phnom Penh City Council members regarding the administration's recent performance in maintaining security and order, particularly in combating various crimes, cracking down on online scams, managing waste, and maintaining roads and drainage systems. City Council member Jup Khon also expressed admiration for the Phnom Penh City Administration's efforts in organizing security and order for the high school diploma examination, effectively combating online scams, and ensuring environmental sanitation.
