Phnom Penh's New Waste Site to Open in 2027, Addressing Sanitation and Financial Challenges

Phnom Penh is set to inaugurate a new waste disposal site located on National Road 51 in Tuol Prek village, Angsnoul district, on January 1, 2027. This facility will take over operations from the current waste site in Dangkor district, Phnom Penh. The announcement was made by Mr. Huot Hai, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, on the morning of September 10, 2026, during the 28th ordinary meeting of the Phnom Penh Municipal Council (3rd year, 4th mandate). He attended as a representative of Mr. Khuong Sreng, Governor of Phnom Penh, alongside Mr. Chub Khon, a council member representing Mr. Mob Sarin, President of the Phnom Penh Municipal Council, at the Phnom Penh City Hall. Mr. Huot Hai further stated that the new waste disposal site spans 143 hectares, with the first phase of development completed to international standards. While the monthly revenue collected from waste disposal fees is estimated at approximately $2 million, Mr. Huot Hai acknowledged that expenditures significantly exceed this amount, resulting in a deficit. Currently, three waste collection and transportation companies gather around 4,100 tons of waste daily, a substantial increase compared to the previous single company which collected about 2,700 tons per day. Additionally, Mr. Huot Hai reported on the effective crackdown on online scam crimes by the authorities and forces of Phnom Penh, attributing the success to the proactive measures taken by each district and the excellent cooperation from local citizens. He also highlighted that Phnom Penh received an award from the World Health Organization for its efforts in promoting road safety through the "Safe, Active, and Healthy Transport and Reducing Inequalities in Urban Mobility" project, a result of the collective efforts of the municipal council, administration, districts, communes, and relevant departments. These remarks were made in response to praise from members of the Phnom Penh Municipal Council, who commended the Phnom Penh administration for its performance over the past month, particularly in maintaining security and public order, cracking down on various offenses including online scams, effectively managing waste, and maintaining roads, sewers, and canals. Mr. Chub Khon also expressed his admiration for the Phnom Penh authorities' organization of security and order during the high school diploma examinations, their successful efforts in combating online scams, and their excellent sanitation and environmental management.
