UN Special Rapporteur Inspects Disputed Area Near Thai Border

UN Special Rapporteur Thomas Andrews conducted an on-site inspection of the Boeung Tracoun area in the Cambodia-Thailand border region. On July 27, 2026, Mr. Andrews, accompanied by Banteay Meanchey Provincial Governor Um Ratry and other provincial officials, visited the location where Thai military forces have reportedly placed shipping containers and barbed wire. The Boeung Tracoun area is a disputed territory between Cambodia and Thailand, with Cambodia asserting that the installation by the Thai military constitutes a violation of its sovereignty. This visit is part of Mr. Andrews' mandate as the new UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia. It is understood that he aimed to directly assess the situation on the ground and gather information from relevant parties. The placement of facilities by the Thai military in the Boeung Tracoun area has become a point of contention in the ongoing border issues between the two nations, with the Cambodian government having previously expressed its concerns. It is presumed that through this inspection, the United Nations intends to examine the human rights implications in the area and explore possibilities for international engagement in de-escalating tensions along the border.
