Phu Quoc Ramps Up Infrastructure for APEC 2027 Hosting

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam's largest, is accelerating its transport infrastructure development as it gears up to host the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. This major undertaking aims not only to prepare for the international conference but also to lay the groundwork for the island's future economic growth. The expansion of DT975, a key arterial road connecting Phu Quoc International Airport with the APEC Convention Center, is currently underway. This route is being developed as a pioneering integrated public transport system for the island, combining a 10-lane motor vehicle road with a light rail transit (LRT) line running along the central median. The LRT will feature elevated and underground sections, spanning a total of 17.59 km with 14 planned stations. The project is notable for its rapid implementation schedule compared to other urban railway developments in Vietnam. Station designs are inspired by the cultural heritage and regional characteristics of various parts of Vietnam, intended to showcase the island's diverse appeal to international visitors. LED screens will also be installed along the route to display images of Vietnam's landscapes and people. Environmental considerations are also a priority, with a continuous green corridor featuring local flora, such as bougainvillea, planned for the central median, serving as a layer of 'green infrastructure.' To meet the tight APEC deadline, construction teams are working around the clock, overcoming challenges posed by the rainy season and complex geological conditions. Road paving is expected to be completed in stages from late 2026 to early 2027, with rail installation for the LRT anticipated within the next six months. The expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport is also being expedited for completion in 2027, enhancing its capacity as the island's air gateway. Furthermore, Sun Group is exploring cooperation with An Giang province on developing Phu Quoc into an international tourism, trade, and financial center, with plans for port facilities and mixed-use commercial developments. These infrastructure upgrades are expected to elevate the island's international profile during APEC 2027 and strengthen its long-term logistics capabilities and competitiveness, marking a significant step toward transforming Phu Quoc into a world-class eco-tourism hub.
